Your Home Business: Goal Setting 101
Setting good business goals is crucial for any home-based business owner. Great goals will help you achieve a state of laser focus while moving toward your dreams. Goals also help you develop and maintain your business motivation.

Ready, Set, Goals!
Here are the most important things to keep in mind when you’re setting your goals:
#1: Set measurable goals. A goal such as, “I want to make $4,000 a month blogging by Dec 21, 2012″ is a good goal. A goal such as, “I want to be rich and feel successful” is not a good goal because it’s not measurable.
When creating a measurable goal, you can divide it into a number of months. You set monthly milestones to achieve before you reach your final goal. A “feeling-based” goal is impossible to track. Either you get there or you don’t, which means that you probably won’t get there at all. Not setting measurable goals greatly reduces your business motivation.
#2: Set realistic goals. Goals should be realistic and your path to reaching the goal should be very clear. You can reach it within your chosen timetable without needing a miracle.
For example, don’t set a goal to be a millionaire next year if you’ve never made more than $3,000 in a month. If you’re making $2,000 a month this year, however, setting a goal for $4,000 a month, or even $6,000 a month, is more realistic. Make your goals ambitious enough to inspire you but not so ambitious that you don’t truly believe you can achieve them.
#3: Know the Why (the reason) as well as the What (the how) of your goals. In addition to knowing what you want, you must have a clear idea of why you want that goal. Keep your why at the forefront of your attention.
For example, if your desire to make money stems from the desire to provide for your family, never ever lose sight of that goal for the money.
#4: Check your goals daily. Are your goals still what you really want? Over the course of a few months or years, your goals may change. People often forget to update their goals when changes occur.
Schedule ten minutes a day going over your goals. This will help you keep on track as well as reinforce your desire for your goals. This discipline will create a powerful sense of momentum.
Why Are You In Business?
Remember that some of the most successful people in the world have a consistent habit of reviewing their goals at the beginning of their day. Millionaires and even billionaires have often said that this first 10 to 30 minutes of the day is the most important part of their day.
Set trackable, realistic goals. Check them daily and recommit to them on an ongoing basis. Know the why and the what behind your list of goals.
